Yannick, I’m convinced you can’t grow business without advertising (well maybe except if you’re Tesla). Have you seen succesful consumer products that were able to grow without paid user acquisition? How important is it for startups to advertise well?

Great question Audrius and thanks for reaching out! You can, BUT only very few can. Rare are those exceptions like Skype or Facebook, who have inherent virality, or runaway product successes like Google. Marketing, and finding great distribution hacks in the early days, is probably the most underestimated skill in tech. When I talk to founders, I expect them to realize this before I would consider an investment. In my opinion, without great marketing you can't exist.... Thanks for the insight Yannick! Could/should Qoorio leverage Quora’s traffic? I often end up on the site once I Google more serious questions. Having said that, I must admit I agree with you only partly. While hitchhiking free traffic is great, I would argue figuring out paid acquisition is cruial to be stable as you never know when you might bet booted from the free traffic source. For example Facebook needed Zynga in the early days and Zynga enjoyd free DAUs, but few years later they needed to pay serious $ to FB to sustain similar amounts of traffic. Heard ir first hand from one of the early Zynga competitors. Also there are numerous stories around SEO traffic crashes after algo updates.

agree with your point. But by your example paid traffic could also be unstable. Change in advertising rules, increased competition, etc..

Zynga is a great example of a company that was too dependant on one channel. I think I mention it in my post
