Serengeti National Park is a Tanzanian national park in the Serengeti ecosystem in the Mara and Simiyu regions.
The word Serengeti derived from the Maasai language (tribe) ’Siringeti’ means an endless plain.
This is the first National Park to be established in Tanzania in 1951. Its largest and iconic place in Africa for wildlife viewing.
With an area of 14763 sq. km (5700 sq. miles), Serengeti is well known for its large concentration of animals and unique wildebeest migration.
Wildebeest migration in the Serengeti ecosystem is older than the modern man. They use Serengeti plain as the season breeding and feeding ground more than a million years ago.
The main animals that migrate are wildebeest and zebra. There are about 2.5 million wildebeest & 1 million zebras migrate every year.
WHY ANIMALS MIGRATE?
There is a combination of factors that cause the animals to migrate. The main reason, however, is to ensure enough food and water throughout the year. The whole migration cycle is 1000 km every year
The video below shows wildebeest crossing the mara river heading to Maasai mara on the Kenyan side. This is the leading river in Africa by having the largest & biggest number of crocodiles.

Zebra grazing down the crater! Ngorongoro crater was formed when a giant volcano exploded & collapsed about 2.5 million years ago. The cone of the volcanic caldera collapsed inwards and formed today's famous Ngorongoro caldera. This is the la rgest unbroken & unfolded caldera in the world. With 610 m deep, Ngorongoro is the home to the big five animals (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant & rhino) and different bird species. Giraffes are not found in the crater because there is no acacia (food) for them.

Cheetah is one of the cat families that are found in Serengeti, Tanzania. These are the fastest cats with a speed of 112 kph and the most successful hunters. Unlike other cats, they hunt almost entirely in the day time. Males are bigger than females and they are ones who defend the territories. Females reach reproductive age between 20-24 months, and they give birth about every 18 months with a high mortality rate. Cubs stay with their mother until the age of 16 to 18 months, at which point this family unit breaks up while the mother goes off to find a mate.

This is Spotted Hyena, the second-largest African carnivore after the lion. The alpha female is the biggest and best-fed member of the clan, which may number from 3 to 12 animals and up to 80 in reserves. Males play no parental role.
These creatures are scavengers. They are ones that clean the ecosystem by eating all carcasses, weak animals, and diseased animals.
Did you know?
Spotted Hyena has the most painful birth compared to nearly all animals. Every female has a pseudo penis (false penis). This is actually their clitoris. They even have a scrotum. This is their labia that have fused together. They have to give birth through this long and narrow thing. Just before this happens, the clitoris (penis) ruptures. This birthing process is so difficult and painful that many first-time mothers die, and many cubs suffocate to death while stuck too long in that narrow opening of a pseudo penis.
