Where two argue, third one... chooses side. This is not a proverb, it is a concept from social psychology. Bus choosing sides and creating polarisation is not really a driver for the progress, it is rather quite a big barrier to it. Can it be decreased or at least somehow managed? This study had a goal to assess what kind of impression friendly or hostile conversation between the leaders or opposing parties has on other people, also in conditions when they do or do not achieve any compromise. Results indicate that even if no compromise is achieved, observing a warm and friendly conversation significantly decreases polarisation on emotional basis. 👆 it looks like all social support campaigns, especially the ones that very explicitly (or even aggressively) demand "whatever", are mostly reflecting the emotions of their leaders, (and not rational arguments). It also looks like everything that is presented in a "compelling manner" (that is if it triggers one of your emotional sweet spots in your head) potentially calls for your raised fist/poster than attempts fo influence your own opinion. Another idea really wants to be placed next to it - most people do not have their ready opinion about most of the issues, but gladly choose to support one or another leader. Usually the one that they choose on emotional basis. Don't want to make affiliations on this basis? Give yourself time to choose. And do not give in into idea that you must have an opinion. Minimalism is a way of life focused on owning as few things as possible (or only as many as necessary). Besides obvious financial or time-saved-for-tidying advantages, switching to minimalism as minimalism itself has noticeable psychological benefits. Participants in this qualitative study were practitioners of minimalism. They stated that they enjoy an improved wellbeing due to increased autonomy, competence, mental space, awareness and positive emotions. Previous research also identifies themes of simplicity, pro-ecological behaviors and control on materialism. How many thing s do you own that you do not really need? Does minimalism, besides being nice source of content for social media, have any other benefits, for example, psychological? Apparently, it does. The research outlines four behaviors related to minimalism: clutter removal, cautious shopping, longevity (of the purchased items, I assume) and self-sufficiency. The research also found that minimalism significantly increases feeling of flourishing (nice choice of the term!) and alleviates depression. 👆 I _always_ said, that tidying is a great form of meditation, that it is also a series of calm, repetitive motions (and leads to relaxation), besides, the result is always visually pleasing!
