72: Hanger test Yes, "hanger" is a made-up word, it means "angry" and "hungry". I am nor a fan of it, but it really well describes another phenomenon, relationship between food an mood. When we eat sweet food, we feel elated, happy, we "function better" (at that moment) (in the specific research - if we are less resilient to stress; 1). When we lack carbohydrates - the mood quickly deteriorates, regardless of whether you are trained in it (2) or not (3 - but there are also research results with opposite results, that after short fast or after the diet very low in calories people felt better; my hypothesis is this: when someone healthy under-eats purposefully, they are angry because of hunger and because of stress, when someone under-eats to lose weight, the weight loss may cause more happiness than hunger causes anger, so they feel better). Same research who have doubts about poor mood also have doubts about effect of the low calorie diet on cognitive functions - it is considered that hungry person does not think well, most probably because he or she cannot stop thinking about the food - but there are very few research papers on this topic (4), it is much more popular to research effect of long term low calorie diet while growing up or in the childhood (5). Here I must stop and admit that I started with an article of very recognizable topic (6), but actually there is very little actual research on this. Not about "sugar low", not about effect of low sugar on anger (it is usually stated that people eat sweet food in order to increase feeling of happiness, but not to decrease feeling of sadness, and no, it is not the same). I did not even fins the fact that academic research agrees on existence of such thing as hanger. Yes, in the situation when person is hungry, anger is noticeable, but the main causes are not attributable to hunger... My conclusion is this: eating and digestion is a very complex process, and counting calories is completely useless (I promise a separate text on that). Human is not a car that need to be filled with gas. On a very general level it is true, but body weight is not defined (only) by how much food we put into the body - hormone balance, content of the food, amount of sleep, level of stress all have impact. That is why trying to judge whether you had enough food by the level of perceived anger is also a very unreliable way to assess whether the amount of food is sufficient. Another book that I would like to recommend. Not the only one of this kind, I will come back to this later as well. Even though it is not psychology, but this knowledge is still very important. One of the obstacles that does not allow to achieve the desired result is lack of knowledge about how things work. If you stand in front of the door with the key in your hand, but have no clue how to use it - you can spend loads of time just standing there, experiencing despair, anger, blaming the door, the key, yourself or the others. But the door will not open because of this. Accepting this fact, also that knowledge needs to be verified, collected, updated - is the field of psychology. This specific knowledge - on food and eating - currently is developing very rapidly. There are still things that are valid, but a lot of other things that are new, and even contradict the previous "truths" - to avoid fats, to snack, to eat until full and not get hungry by any means, to eat sugars or food in general in order to have energy (whatever that is), to be able to compensate by exercising if you ate more the day before, to be able to "burn" excess food, etc. Now we know more, so we can treat our bodies a lot better and achieve results a lot faster. Research. People tend to eat more when they feel more positive emotions as well as they feel more negative emotions than usual (here we should think of both celebrations and stress situations). On top of that, people tend to eat more after they overeat (here we should think about feelings of guilt and helplessness). I short, emotional peaks are a risk for overeating. My take on this: it does not really matter whether you "let yourself go" during vacations, or you "seek comfort" in food when stressed - too much food is too much food, with all the consequences. Emotional problems need to be resolved using emotional tools (like deliberation, planning, behavior rehearsal, speaking), and food needs to be used food-related issues (obtaining nutritional substances). Your dismay or frustration does not have a role in the physiological digestion process. Several things you should know about the Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, ARFID. It is not "just" a picky eating. This eating disorder causes great psychological and physical stress, people may gag or choke if trying to swallow something that causes them anxiety - foods of specific texture, smell, appearance, or something they choked on before. Because of this people may avoid eating situations all together, like cafeterias or parties. This disorder may be the cause of serious weight loss of failure to grow. People with this disorder are not concerned with their weight or body image as often is the case with other eating disorders. It may occur in people of all ages and genders. Along with this disorder, people may experience anxiety, mood disorders, symptoms from autism spectrum.
