Research. Vitamin D does not help to prevent depression in middle or older age. Additional consumption of vitamin D does not even help to improve mood. The research was done with help of 18000 participants and took five years (which in academic research world is impressively big piece of work). Apparently such myth was widespread, and not without help of research - many published papers stated that lack vitamin D and depression are related. But correlation does not mean causation. All participants at the beginning of this research did not have any depressive symptoms, and researchers were monitoring whether vitamin D help to prevent development of the depression compared to control group who took placebo. Now we can clearly state that vitamin D has many other good properties, but it definitely does not help wtih avoiding depression.
Just enjoy sunshine and be happy :)
