Gangster move by TikTok 💪 Just before Big Four(Apple, Amazon, Google, FB) antitrust hearing TikTok challenged competition to reveal more about it’s algorithms and moderation policies. Before that they posted article how TikTok’s personal feed is working. Quote: “Even more, we believe our entire industry should be held to an exceptionally high standard. That's why we believe all companies should disclose their algorithms, moderation policies, and data flows to regulators. We will not wait for regulation to come, but instead TikTok has taken the first step by launching a Transparency and Accountability Center for moderation and data practices. Experts can observe our moderation policies in real-time, as well as examine the actual code that drives our algorithms. This puts us a step ahead of the industry, and we encourage others to follow suit.” Resource: https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/fair-competition-and-transparency-benefits-us-all

A good example of changing your product flaws into advantages. Tik Tok itself was always on the edge between legitimate and shady, as this analysis https://rufposten.de/blog/2019/12/05/privacy-analysis-of-tiktoks-app-and-website/ from a few months ago show. I really hope it’s an actual change in how they develop the product and it’s strategy rather than just a PR stunt.

Dominykas Rimša i agree, change of course seems like defensive action against political preassure. Antanas Bernatonis from stackholders perspective they should do nothing. Especially after antitrust hearing have passed :) Povilas Godliauskas thats right. But they have many US investors as well. Also US nationality CEO together with significant workforce.

Mangirdas Microsoft had to go and literally pitch the deal to Trump 😅 but it seems they managed to convince him https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2020/08/02/microsoft-to-continue-discussions-on-potential-tiktok-purchase-in-the-united-states/

Mr. Trump signs order banning transactions with Tiktok. Wechat also also affected. 45 days till order takes effect. https://techcrunch.com/2020/08/06/trump-signs-executive-orders-banning-transactions-with-tiktok-and-wechat/

It’s a little mind blowing how can they sign an order without revealing it’s exact details and saying that full extent of it will be revealed on a day that the order comes into action. I don’t know US law so maybe it’s all fine, but just seems like a meassure to put sticks into Microsoft deal wheels rather than an actual thought through measure.

Software is eating the world. Zoom is now worth more than 7 biggest airlines combined. If you think this comparison is a bit odd, stop for a second and realize that airlines and video communication software are actually in an indirect competition. We all have attended a meeting that should have been an email and we probably also have been on a business-trip that could have been a video call. This is one of the best examples of dematerialization and how capitalism and technological progress is allowing humanity to do More from Less. If you want to know more about the topic I highly encourage you to read a book More from Less: The Surprising Story of How We Learned to Prosper Using Fewer Resources by Andrew McAfee. It’s a book full of optimism telling how as we get richer, we are using resources more efficiently, using less energy, causing less pollution and cleaning up the pollution of the past.
