Hi! How do you take care of your physical, social, and mental well-being? What works for you best and what doesn't? Asked by Povilas Godliauskas
Interesting question. I was thinking about that for some time, and I can conclude the following:
1. Physical well-being. This is a straightforward one – (i) I do workouts 3x a week, (ii) go to bed before 10 pm, sleep minimum 8 hours, (iii) walk for min an hour 2x a week, (iv) drink min. 1.5 ltr of water every day, (v) eat healthy and nutritious food (often prepared by myself, no sugar, no junk food). I can say those timeless and simple routines always work for me. Everything that is the opposite – does not work, i.e., no physical activity, junk food, more than two glasses of wine a night, etc.
2. Social well-being. What works to me is spending my time alone, with my family, with a few close friends and a few people I use most. The more time I spend with other people than the abovementioned, the more drained I feel.
3. Emotional well-being. This is the most complicated. I usually face emotional challenges first by ignoring them. Then by pretending that they don’t exist. Then denying that they exist. Then trying to create an internal narrative that everything is all right. I also blame other people and myself that they are not good enough. I also vent my emotions to people I interact. Or become negative and try to pass my painful emotions to the shoulders of other people. In essence, all that I do is to try to escape and avoid my internal emotional challenges. Then eventually, the whole thing blows up, and I writhen on a sofa in pain. All of that does not help at all. Then I look for professional help, start to be kinder to people, stop blaming everyone, and allow myself to live the emotions as I cannot control them, accept the reality which differs from the one is created in my mind (both in positive and negative ways), get my shit together and continue living the new life. Which is usually more about relationships and emotions among people, and less about concepts, models, and ideals. This helps.
