Octopus is the only species with super high intelligence (by human standards) known to us that does not engage in any social activities. Primates and dolphins and dogs and so many others like to form social bonds, but octopus is solitary animal. Even in mating rituals a social distance is kept and often the female will snack on her lover afterwards. Imagine, your whole body is brain, you can taste the world and see through eyes and skin. Everything is a vivid muted underwater dream. What internal life does an octopus lead? I imagine them being true poets, connoisseurs of internal landscapes contemplating the beauty and the absurdity of life. "Book of Disquiet" by Fernando Pessoa could have been written by an octopus, quietly observing marine life in a safe shelter of its den.

This is a beautiful octopus changing colours, shapes and texture of its skin. 🐙 But... Did you know that octopuses are colour blind? 😵 How does an animal that perfectly matches its vivid surroundings NOT see colour? 🐙 A lot of researchers are trying to solve this mystery and for the scientists were able to prove that octopus skin is sensitive to light with no brain function. Basically they see instantly with their skin! 🐙 Not only octopus can see with their skin, but also their pupils might be able to see colour while their eyes are colour blind. Mind blowing, isn't it? https://news.berkeley.edu/2016/07/05/weird-pupils-let-octopuses-see-their-colorful-gardens/

Octopuses easily orientate in new environments and are very curious animals that keep exploring. However, researchers struggle with a fact that octopus sometimes is not interested to do the task and tease observers. Like you can't be bothered to do things for some frozen, non apetizing shrimps, right? While it's been a bumpy road with primates, at least they are our cousins and it is easier to understand how to motivate them, but octopuses pose a whole new challenge. This is a short video of small tasks octopus can do if it is in a good mood. Such a darling 🐙❤️

Octopus is one of the smartest animals on earth that can perform very complicated tasks even by human standards. However, it can transform its body instantly, see and taste with its skin and most of its body functions as brain. We really have no idea what kind of world this creature experiences since it is so wildly different. Just imagine being shapeless abstract creature with no central brain, but rather a cognitive system dispersed throughout the whole body! Your hand is you, but also holds some level of independence. Wild, right? Inky outsmarted New Zealand aquarium and dashed to the freedom! How could you not be in love with Octopus?
