Today I joined a streaming show on Twitch and the topic of the discussion was political correctness, what do you think about it? Is being politically correct a threat to free speech? Let's start a discussion here.
Political correctness started off as a way to pander to as many voters as possible. In a modern western democracy -in which numbers make the Law- it wouldn’t surprise me if, in the near future, someone would risk jail time for not following common thought. We all know how common thought doesn’t necessarily mean ethical/just thought.
To summarize yes, I agree that political correctness CAN very well threaten freedom of speech, though its just one of the many representations of how mainstream society -even in its many spectrums of high average educated individuals and easy-to-access truthful information- CAN be manipulated. It’s as easy as getting an ad for a product you were thinking about the other day after you granted your cookies on a random website.
Aye I agree, I think that being polite and respectful is important, but it's impossible to express any idea without risking of offending someone. Political correctness is just a mean to eliminate people with a different opinion from the political debate.
PC is a cop-out from people who are too chicken to stand up for actual policies. It’s easy to give out to someone for using a word they ‘shouldn’t’ - it’s a lot harder to pay more taxes, volunteer your free time, keep pressure on your elected representatives.
What’s more - you’re giving power to people who want to say these ‘wrong’ things anyway because it now gives them another tool to show their dissent and prove you can’t control them, one.
And two, suddenly all the energy on the debate of how to improve minorities’ lives gets sucked out of the the room because of an exaggerated focus on vocabulary instead of the real issues around policy for solving inequality and injustice.
Three - if we can’t talk about our differences anymore, we can’t laugh about them anymore either. No easier way to bring different cultures and ethnicities together than to have them make fun of each other and to call out the bullshit - instead of quivering away behind ‘norms’.
i totally agree, today debates are limited due to political correctness, which doesn't allow you to use some words or some expressions and prevent people from understanding each other.

Absolutely. This is the motto of my Latvian national guard unit! The only way to deter an enemy invasion is to show that the pain following any military action will be serious. 💪🏻🇱🇻

However I don't think this vote will led to a crisis of the actual government. For non European there won't be significant repercussion since new migration law are not under discussion for now
